The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Plot:

Before dying, Merlin gives his remaining apprentice a dragon ring that will choose the Prime Merlinian, who will become Merlin’s successor. Only the Prime Merlinian will be able to defeat Morgana. Throughout history Balthazar imprisons Morganians, sorcerers who try to release Morgana, including Horvath, into successive layers on the Grimhold while he searches for the successor.

Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent, is seen interrogating a Russian defector, Orlov. He tells of an X Day operation, which will lead to crisis in the United States. Orlov also mentions that at the funeral of the late Vice President in New York, the Russian President will be killed. The last thing he mentions is that Salt is the Russian spy. Ted Winter, Peabody, and other CIA officials see that Orlov is telling the truth. Salt, who is badly shaken after the accusation suddenly thinks of her husband. She attempts to contact him, but is not able to. At the same time, Orlov escapes and Salt goes into hiding, causing the CIA think she is a spy. Furthermore, if Orlov’s words are correct, Salt is supposed to kill the Russian President. She goes on the run and escapes numerous times before assuming a new disguise which helps her successfully elude capture. The next day she sneaks into the heavily guarded St. Bartholomew Church where the Vice President’s funeral is being held. Salt climbs in from underground and kills the nearby guards. As the CIA and soldiers close in on her, she creates havoc by blowing up numerous parts of the church as well as capturing the Russian President and killing him. Salt meets Orlov who congratulates her on her killings. There are a series of flashbacks that show Salt grew up in the Soviet Union where Orlov taught her and many other children to obey him and disguise themselves into the American government. Then, when it came to X Day, he would command them to strike from various positions in the US. He brings her to a river barge where he shows her Part Two of X Day, which would be stealing the Atomic weapon controls from the United States Government. Salt decides to kill Orlov after seeing him murder her husband and she runs away, this time to meet with a designated mole in NATO. The two go to the White House, with Salt disguised in a military uniform and wig.

The movie is directed by Phillip Noyce. This is a reunion project for Angelina and Phillip. They both worked on the 1999 thriller The Bone Collector, along with Oscar winner Denzel Washington. Salt is also their comeback film. Angelina was last seen in Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated film The Changeling in 2008. Noyce’s last movie was Catch a Fire in 2006. The thriller was about the apartheid in South Africa and starred Tim Robbins and Derek Luke.

He also added that the role closely resembled his character on the Mission: Impossible series, Ethan Hunt. The script was then sent to Angelina and loved the project of having a female spy franchise. The character was then changed to Evelyn Salt and shooting began in March 2009. To prepare for the film, Angelina began a rigid training so that she can perform her own stunts. But she suffered minor injury in May that year while filming for a fight sequence. But nothing serious happened and shooting resumed later that day.

Evelyn then goes on the run to clear her name and is out to prove that someone else is the traitor, while trying to reunite her family.

The role was first offered to Tom Cruise in 2007 as Edwin A. Salt but he declined because of scheduling conflicts. He also added that he feared that the role closely resembled his character Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series. The filmmakers tried to convince him that the role was different but later accepted the fact that the Cruise had a point that Salt was closely similar to Hunt. Phillip Noyce, the director of the movie said, “But, you know, he had a valid point. It was kind of returning to an offshoot of a character he’d already played. It’s like playing the brother or the cousin of somebody that you played in the movie.” Amy Pascal, an executive of Columbia Pictures, then suggested to Noyce to ask for Angelina to play the character. Angelina and Amy once talked about how Angelina wanted to create a female spy franchise like Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, Jason Bourne of the Bourne films, and James Bond of the Bond franchise. Jolie was then sent the script written by Kurt Wimmer that September and loved the project. Wimmer, Noyce, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura then went to France to talk to Angelina for the film and for the possible “sex change” of the character. Writer Brian Helgelandthen developed the character to change the gender from being Edward A. Salt to Evelyn Salt. And the rest is, what they always say, film history.
